Why are murals so important?

Well, where to start?! Murals are the best!!! I mean… I would say that wouldn’t I!

No, but seriously, I have painted murals for communities, individuals, businesses and schools and I can tell you, the impact they have is soo positive. It makes such a difference to how people feel in a space and how they interact in it. They make people smile, they make a space feel like it’s been cared for.

Transformation

Sometimes it’s hard to remember how boring the walls were, until you see a before and after picture. It starts off as a plain white shell. A sad little space that needs some life pumped into it. It can sometimes be hard for people to imagine just how different it will look, even when there are designs in place. But the reaction I always get is one of awe of how much better it is than anything they could have imagined!

I love a before and after because it really show how different the space is and how much personality it now has.

Welcoming

One of the biggest things is how welcoming the space feels when it’s been painted. I find this most impactful when I work with businesses because it really changes how customers and clients feel when they walk in.

When painting for businesses you need to work out how someone is going to interact with the space and why they are visiting in the first place. My ethos is all about creating environments that make people feel joyful when they step in, which immediately makes people feel at ease. You want it to feel like the company have put in the effort to make an exciting space, which immediately makes you trust them more.

Community

If you have a space that is welcoming and beautiful, it makes people want to use it and be in it. Working on projects with The Albany, Better Space and Lewisham Music I was able to give them walls that changed the whole personality of the space.

With Lewisham Music, they wanted a mural in their entrance to show people straight away that this is a fun and exciting environment for kids to come and learn. They then asked if I would transform their other spaces to tie it altogether and make it a coherent space. I added pops of colour and larger shapes throughout the building and it’s made it a great space to learn in.

The Albany Theatre in Deptford asked me to transform their cafe area to entice people to come in after Covid and make it a place that people wanted to come and hang out in. I painted all the walls and added so much colour and pattern into it that it has now become a thriving part of the community.

Better Space in Farringdon is a co-working space and they needed it to feel vibrant and a workplace they wanted to be in. I painted several murals around the building and gave each place it’s own personality. It’s now a hive of activity and has become an integral part of the community.

Home

Murals can make your house feel like a home. It can also sort disputes! I had a couple who couldn’t agree on artwork for their home, but they could agree on a mural! I’ve painted nurseries for the arrival of new cuties to make their bedroom feel cosy and special. I’ve painted kitchens and hallways and turned dull unused spaces into people’s favourite parts of their houses!

It is just such a pleasure to help individuals and give their home something special .

Educational Settings

Where we learn has a huge impact on how we feel and how we take in information. I remember my school was absolutely hideous, and eventually was demolished, but I just didn’t want to be in those horrible sad classrooms. Everything was grey, everything was old and everything looked so clinical.

That’s why I absolutely loooove painting schools! It makes everything come alive, it makes kids excited and it makes the parents happy too! A mural can make soo much difference to how we feel, because let’s face it, school isn’t most people’s favourite place, so why make it worse than it needs to be?!

Last year most of my income was made up of school painting and I love that. It means people are investing in their kids and making changes to make school exciting.

Happiness!

Overall, murals make people happy! I can’t speak for everyone of course, but from all the amazing feedback I’ve had from people, I can tell you how much it makes people’s lives better.

I’ve had parents come up to me and tell me that they were having a really bad day, but seeing my mural made everything better. They’ve told me how much their kids love the mural and how much they now want to be an artist.

All these things make me extremely happy and make it all worthwhile!

And that folks, is why murals are so important and why they are the best!!!
